Phoenix MG Challenge
Lydden Hill
(round 10)
The weekend of July 13/14 was British Grand Prix weekend, with the countries race fans heading for Silverstone.
But ! there was an alternative to the long queues of traffic and everything else that goes with Formula One.
There was a packed two day race program at Lydden Hill, amongst which was the latest round of the Phoenix MG Challenge.
Like the Ferrari fortunes at Silverstone the race was short-lived, scheduled for twelve laps, only four laps were completed, and in those four laps the red flag came out twice !
In the previous race ( Hot Hatch Fords ) there was also carnage with two red flags, in as many laps.
The carnage then spread to the Phoenix MG boys who took two attempts at producing a result over four laps. Midget driver John Stopes had the measure of Don Kettleborough's MGF when Alan Brooke chucked his Metro into the tyres at Paddock.
The re-run was also halted when Blaine Neaves ploughed into the Devil's Elbow tyre wall.
With time pressing on, the organisers decided that was enough.
But in those four laps John Stopes again proved the Midget mightier than the MGF of Don Kettleborough.
| 1st | John Stopes | Midget |
| 2nd | John Kettleborough | MGF |
| 3rd | Malcolm Self | MG Midget |
| 4th | Martin Ward | MG Metro |
| 5th | David Javes | MG Metro |
| 6th | Blaine Neaves | MGB |
The Fastest lap was set by Stopes 49.9 sec at 73.61 mph
